The University of South Dakota (USD) is a public research university in Vermillion, South Dakota. It was established by the Dakota Territory legislature in 1862. It is known as the Flagship University of South Dakota and is also the oldest public university of the state.
USD has a total enrollment of 9464 in fall 2021 out of which 6987 are undergraduate, 1980 are graduate students and 270 medicine and 227 law students. The university suggests that international students make up about 2.9% of the student body from around 37 different countries.
USD offers 202 undergraduate programs and 84 graduate programs. It has its own Law, Medicine and Business Schools as well as Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences. It also offers Honors programs (signature program) for academically talented and highly motivated students. Its Centre for Academic and Global Engagement allows students to opt for study abroad programs. The university also offers Undergraduate Research program (signature program) where students from 1st or 2nd year can join research teams, earn mini-grants, present at national conferences or conduct their research at sites around the world. USD offers a wide range of resources and facilities including science, health and research laboratories, basketball and volleyball courts, track, field and soccer facilities along with several restaurants, food courts and eateries on campus. There are more than 120 organizations and clubs that the students can participate in. It also has a bookstore on campus and a child care center. There’s a range of on campus housing options available for students. 84% of new freshmen live on campus.
