It evolved through the unification of four historic colleges—Whiteland's, Southlands, Digby Stuart, and Froebel—each founded in the 19th century. These colleges merged to form the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education in 1975, which gained university status in 2004 as the University of Roehampton.
