Everything You Need to Know About the GRE
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test used primarily for admission to graduate and business school programs, especially in the U.S. and Canada. The GRE is designed to assess your readiness for graduate-level work and is used by many institutions to make admission decisions.
The GRE contains three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The format for the exam is typically computer-based, with a paper-based option in some parts of the world. The Verbal and Quantitative sections are scored on a scale of 130 to 170 while the Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6. The preparation involves studying test content and practicing under timed conditions.
What are the things that students must know about GRE?
1. Test Structure
The GRE test structure consists of three main sections:
· Analytical Writing:
The tasks for this part are to write two essays: an Issue Essay and an Argument essay. In an Issue essay, you are asked to respond to a statement or claim from your perspective; meanwhile, in an argument essay, you evaluate and analyse an argument presented in a brief passage. The duration for each essay is 30 minutes. The scores range from 0 to 6, in half-point increments.
· Verbal Reasoning:
This part has various question types. They include:
1. Reading Comprehension: In this part, students must answer the questions about the given passages.
2. Text Completion: In this part, students must fill in the gaps in passages with appropriate words.
3. Sentence Equivalence: In this section, students are asked to choose two words (synonyms) that complete a sentence and make it logically consistent.
There are two sections in this part and the duration for each section is 30 minutes. The score ranges from 130 to 170, in one-point increment.
· Quantitative Reasoning:
This part has two sections. One is the Problem Solving part where students are asked to solve mathematical problems, and another is Quantitative Comparison where students are enquired to compare two quantities and determine their relationship.
The time duration for each section is 35 minutes and the scores range from 130 to 170, in one-point increment.
